STARTING POINTS

This project considers the origins of the creative process and the role of writing in search of alternative starting points in the conception of space. This work serves to continue an ongoing investigation and invoke a series of steps that navigate between the written word and methods of collage.

NO. 2

The process begins with a focus on language and the role of the signifier in the design process. An initial collection of textual fragments evolve into prose that contained textures, smells, emotions, rhythms, and examined the infinite narrative possibilities afforded by a process of collage when applied to language. These linguistic episodes are decoded through an analytical exercise that transforms prose into visual arguments in large part devoid of narrative structure or metaphorical association. The second phase of this process is first and foremost an investigation into the limits of the diagram and its potential to provide alternate readings. This design work requires a return to the original prose with the inherent goal of jumpstarting the creative process with techniques that at first might seem highly random - searching for the visual synonyms. Unlike analytical exercises, that translate language into a Cartesian system and quite often assign numeric value to the text, this work requires that the signifier find direct visual expression.
